Uncle Don’s at SS2 Petaling Jaya could not be more aptly described than the word ‘shot to stardom’. We noticed it since 2016, that at a any time of the day, this cafe bistro will full to its brink. Apparently, its food were cheap and taste rather good, if you’re not picky. So it seems….
We had wanted to try Uncle Don’s for a long time. Out first few attempts failed. It’s full in the lunch hour, non lunch hour, dinner up till late at night, even on a weekday. It got us wondered, what the heck were people doing in there all the time! On our last try, we ordered for a takeaway, as I was obsessively curious about Uncle Don’s fame.
Our orders were two chicken dishes – Mushroom Chicken Chop and Black Pepper Chicken Chop. As we laid out our dinner, the very first things I noticed, were the sauces. Were they always this diluted? The mushroom sauce didn’t taste like mushroom sauce and the black pepper had an unbearable bitter taste to it. To add insult to injury, they were very oily.
For the chicken chops, we were badly surprised by the textures – dry and tough. I couldn’t make out how did they cook the chicken meat. I thought they looked like a combination of bad frying and worse grilling. We couldn’t decide which were worse, the chicken or the sauce, but yeah… they were that bad.
The fries were run-of-the-mill type and the coleslaw ended up as the best part of our meal.
Later, a little search on Tripadvisor and the crowd were explained. So the story goes.. Uncle Don’s is said to serve beers at a cheap price. Bummer.. cause CS and I hardly drink.
