Restaurant Soto Shah Alam @ Seksyen 8

Roti Canai at Restoran Soto Shah Alam

Restaurant Soto Shah Alam in Seksyen 8 is one of our favorite place for Malay style breakfast. The reason is simple – it makes a good lontong, almost as good as the one I had back in Johor. I once asked the owner, whether they were of Johor origin, but the answer was no. She told me they just cook any recipes they know or learned.

The kuah lontong tends to get snapped up very fast, which explains why I didn’t post a photo of it. I managed to get my bowl of lontong last week, but I was too happy and simply wolfed it down. The only thing I nitpicked about, is the nasi himpit that were slightly undercooked, resulting in the hard texture. You can make the kuah lontong better, by adding the sambal sotong (cuttlefish, not the squid), it’s my secret to the perfect lontong.

Restaurant Soto Shah Alam serves a wide variety of breakfast and lunch. I’m not too sure about dinner, as I haven’t been here during the evening. Morning menu includes nasi lemak, nasi kerabu (with daging salai!), noodle soup, fried rice and noodles, a variety of Malay kueh (cakes) with its signature ubi kayu rebus (blanched tapioca), served with shredded coconut and sugar.

The nasi lemak is hit or miss. The rice and original sambal are rather average, but the winning streak is in the sambal kerang – fat juicy cockles.

I like Soto or noodle soup, especially in a morning when my stomach still refused to wake up, nor functions nicely for spicy food. However, the last time I visited, the chicken meat in the soup is a little lackluster. Taste a little frozen, if you get what I mean.

Roti Canai at Restaurant Soto Shah Alam

I have always complained about how hard it is to find a roti canai that were properly folded and pulled. Hence, I was satisfied to see their roti canai guy pull and flip the dough a few times before frying it.

When noon comes, Restaurant Soto’s staffs will place out trays and trays of Malay dishes for their nasi campur. There’s even a stall for grill fish so we are spoilt with choices, every time we are here.
