Kari Kambing 40 Hari @ Yong Peng, Johor

Kari Kambing 40 Hari

Kari Kambing 40 Hari was a rare find during our recent trip to Yong Peng. It was located some kilometers away from the main stretch of Yong Peng town, a place you won’t stumble upon unless you have a purpose to be there.

So how did we got to know Restoran Kari Kambing 40 Hari’s existence? CS somehow made some trip recently and as he’s driving along North-South Expressway, he spotted the restaurant with a big green signboard that drew a big crowd and told me about it. Coincidentally, I had to run an errand at Yong Peng last week so 1 + 1 equals 100.

Succulent mutton curry at Kari Kambing 40 Hari at Jalan Besar, Yong Peng.

We made a few stops along the Yong Peng town, so by the time we reached Restoran Kari Kambing 40 Hari, we were stuffed like a turkey. I thought we should just investigate the place and take a few pictures of the place for future reference.

However, I was hooked by the smell. No mistake about it – nicely cooked mutton (kambing). We contemplate a little and decided to park our car anyway, and soon, CS joined the long queue. One plate.. just one plate to share. 🙂

The long queue at Kari Kambing 40 Hari

While the long queue takes a while, we thought it’s rather manageable as the staffs move swiftly to rustle up the rice, meat and raw vegetables. The challenge is probably on finding a cleared-out table, as the ‘cleaning crew’ had a hard time catching up with the turn-overs. If this happens, just stand and gesture for one of them to clear your table. You might want to know that flies are aplenty too.

Chicken cooked with Nasi Arab

Although branded as Nasi Arab, I found the recipe rather similar to nasi beriani gam. The chicken was cooked together in the parboiled rice. Mutton, on the other hand, was cooked normally like beriani curry.

There’s a choice of ordering Nasi Arab with either the parboiled chicken or the kari kambing. Anyone who comes in a big group can opt for their dulang set (tray) that can easily feed 4 – 6 people.

Delicious Nasi Arab at Kari Kambing 40 Hari in Yong Peng, Johor

The Nasi Arab was seriously fluffy and fragrant, spiked with generous amount of aromatic cloves. The kari kambing (mutton curry) was bursting with flavor and the portion was generous. As a Johorean myself, Johorean food are sometimes on the sweeter side. The kari kambing was perfect for us, but people who don’t like sweet food might need to take note of the sweeter palate.

While the mutton was not as tender as the one at Beriani Pokok Sena, its taste easily overrides that issue. We relished on every bite of mutton at Kari Kambing 40 Hari.  The acar vegetable was surprisingly not an acar, but just diced vegetables, which were unremarkable.

Kari Kambing 40 Hari’s prices (Sep 2017):

Nasi Arab Kambing (Mutton) – RM13

Nasi Arab Ayam (Chicken) – RM13

Nasi Arab Dulang set – RM49

We were happy with our decision o to check out Kari Kambing 40 Hari. Now, we have a place we can stop by in the morning, whenever we are coming back to Batu Pahat!
